Science Online 2009 - how technology impacts on academic careers



The internet has changed the way many of us live and work. But how is science being affected by the increasing use of the internet; both in terms of the types of work and collaboration and also how science is communicated.

How is science changing as the use of the internet and media changes enabled by the internet penetrate into core areas? Electronic access is having a big impact on citations and other metrics used by this community. Nobody really knows where it’s going. For example, since 2003, more papers have been published by multi-collaborative authors (more than 5 authors) rather than single or dual authors. Accessing those papers over the internet makes tracking use and citation problematic.
